Canyon Dave leads a Sit-at-the-Rim geology talk at Grand Canyon.

Our Story

Canyon Dave Thayer

Dave Thayer — Canyon Dave

Dave’s love of the Grand Canyon began as a boy when he first hiked the Kaibab, Bright Angel, and North Kaibab Trails. By 18 he was a regular. By 29 he had backpacked 1,750 miles on the canyon’s many trails and slopes, and has since rafted the Colorado River ten times.

He studied at Yale and earned his Master’s Degree in Geology from the University of Arizona. For eight years he was a Professor of Geology and later Science Division Chairman at Yavapai Community College in Prescott. He then became Curator of Geology at the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum in Tucson, overseeing its exhibits, geology programs, and field trips.

Dave has published extensively on the Grand Canyon — trail guides, scientific articles, and two books: Geology of Grand Canyon along Bright Angel Trail (1986) and Introduction to Grand Canyon Fossils (2009).

In 2001 he founded Canyon Dave Tours. He personally trains every guide in the history, geology, and ecology of the canyon he knows so intimately — producing what he calls the “Grand Canyon Supergroup.” The name is a geology pun: the Grand Canyon Supergroup is a real sequence of ancient rocks in the canyon’s inner gorge.

Dora Thayer, former Grand Canyon National Park Ranger

Dora “the Explorer” Thayer

Dave met Dora at the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum, he as Curator of Geology and she as a volunteer docent. Dora holds a BS in field biology with specializations in geology, botany, and marine biology, and later served as a Grand Canyon National Park Ranger. She joined Canyon Dave Tours full time in 2004 as CFO and guide.

In 2007 the company incorporated, with Dave as President and CEO and Dora as Vice-President and CFO. Their shared philosophy — shaped by years leading tours and field trips at the Desert Museum — is that every visitor carries an implied invitation to participate in the conservation of the places they visit. Canyon Dave Tours is built on that idea.

Our Guides — The Grand Canyon Supergroup

Leonor Schlachter with young guests at Grand Canyon

Leonor Schlachter — Leo (pronounced Lay-oh)

I’m from Bogotá, Colombia, where I was an avid rock climber and mountaineer. I represented Colombia at the First Women’s Andes Mountaineer Meeting organized by Chile in the late 1980s, and spent the following decade climbing the snow-covered peaks of Peru, Bolivia, Ecuador, and Colombia. When my brother took me to the Grand Canyon on a visit to Arizona, I knew this would be the next chapter of my life.

I was very taken with the fact that to hike the Grand Canyon you walk down — I had always climbed up. So I moved to Arizona in 1998 and majored in Parks and Recreation with an Outdoor Emphasis at Northern Arizona University. While studying, I worked as a field instructor for the backcountry guides program and hiked many of the North Rim trails. Summers I volunteered with the Conservation Corps, building steps on trails I had already come to love.

I am a teacher at heart. After my children arrived, I went back to university and specialized in Waldorf Education, teaching indoors for more than a decade before my heart called me back outside. Joining Canyon Dave Tours gave me the chance to deepen my knowledge of geology, biology, and the canyon’s incredible natural history — learning directly from Dave and Dora. I love spending a few hours one-on-one with our guests in this astonishing place.

In my free time I enjoy cooking, films, and hiking the beautiful trails of northern Arizona with friends and family.

Tim Wilson, Grand Canyon guide

Tim Wilson

Hi, I’m Tim. I grew up in the Valley of the Sun and graduated from Arizona State University in 2008. After school I moved to northern Arizona to work for the Arizona Conservation Corps — which is how I was first introduced to Grand Canyon, working on its trails. I fell in love with the place immediately and had to learn everything about it. I was fortunate to meet Canyon Dave, who taught me the geology, and it’s been a privilege guiding ever since.

When I’m not guiding, you’ll find me on a trail hiking or biking. I backpack and camp in the Canyon as often as I can. I’m also an avid reader — especially history and natural science.

Linda Edwards, Grand Canyon guide

Linda Edwards

Hello, I’m Linda. I came to Arizona to earn a BS in Environmental Planning and a Master’s in Public Administration from Arizona State University, then spent years working with chapters on the Navajo Nation. I retired in Flagstaff and have spent the best years since outdoors — skiing, hiking, boating, RVing, and fishing. I love sharing what I know about the canyon’s nature and history with every guest I meet.

Jake Case, Grand Canyon guide

Jake Case

I’m Jake. I’m an avid hiker and the Grand Canyon is one of my favorite places in the world. I love visiting with other people — talking geology, plant and animal life, native culture, weather, landmarks, and pretty much anything else the landscape brings up.

My specialty is geology, which I minored in at NAU alongside a geography major. I’ve spent years researching the natural world independently and hiking all over the Grand Canyon, Flagstaff, and Sedona areas. I also do landscape photography, and some of my best shots have come from the rim.

A Guest’s Experience

“We had a fantastic day with this company — extremely knowledgeable, fun and fabulous people. We actually had THE ‘Canyon Dave’ on our tour, along with his protégé Rachel, who was lovely. Well worth the money and definitely recommended.” — CaroleJane BT

A Message from Dave

“At Canyon Dave Tours, we really listen to you — we never spout information like a TV that no one is watching. Your contribution to our tour is essential, because you are doing something bigger than yourself: you are increasing your own understanding of local nature, history, and culture. Learning leads to love, and love to protection and care.

We foster open-ended conversation rather than a canned spiel. While the goal is to learn about the Grand Canyon, having fun is vital too. Happy, engaged people are more alert — they learn and experience more. That’s why your contribution is the heart of our tours. You are much more than a mere passenger. We hope you will bring your viewpoints to our viewpoints. And we always hope your adventure isn’t over when the tour ends.”
